AIA INDIANA 2012 CODES SEMINAR – Using the Codes as a Pre-Design Tool

The seminar focus is on the use of the adopted Codes as a pre-design tool. Required primary design issues are covered including occupancy classification, components of the means of egress, egress arrangement, protection of building structures, life safety systems requirements, and accessibility.

Learning Objectives

1.     Understand the difference between Codes and Standards and the application.

2.     Apply the Life Safety Code issues to a project prior to researching the other Building Codes and System standards.

3.     Work with and create a checklist to assure a completed Code research during preliminary design.

4.     Understand coordination requirements of the various Codes and Standards applicable to a project.

 

An attendee workbook is included that provides:

*Detailed course outline for the Codes investigated.

*Tables and checklists to aid the design process and provide for future reference. 

 

Course Instructor

The instructor is Robert Miller, a licensed Architect in Louisiana. Miller served 13 years with the Louisiana State Fire Marshal office where he retired in 2006 as a Senior Staff Architect. While at the Fire Marshal’s Office, Miller served in the capacity of codes instructor across the State at AIA and Engineering Society sponsored seminars and State Fire Marshal and Fire Prevention District building inspectors.

Drawing on more than 40 years’ experience as general contractor, architectural specialty contractor, professional architectural practitioner, and code official, he communicates the correlation between the codes and the design process in a personal style that provides the student with a better understanding of the Codes in the Design process.

Miller’s firm, The Building Code Institute LLC, provides Building and Life safety Code continuing education seminars, a code consulting practice for firms in several States, and is available for professional witness services. He is a Professional member of the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association and maintains current documents of those organizations.
